Maria Lufrano, MD, is a specialist in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology. Dr. Lufrano grew up in Westchester County and graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism as well a minor in biology and chemistry. She then pursued a Master in Science from New York Medical College in biochemistry and molecular biology. During her post-graduate training, she focused on breast cancer research. Maria continued to be interested in medicine and research and decided to pursue a degree in medicine. In 2002 she graduated from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at North Shore University Hospital – Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Long Island in 2012. 
She has remained actively involved in research throughout her career and has published several scientific papers and presented at national scientific meetings. She is double board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine.
